The NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) defines North American standards for various grades of electrical enclosures used in industrial applications. Each one is rated to prevent personnel from contacting hazardous parts, as well as additional depending on the type of specified environmental conditions. What is NEMA enclosure types?

1,NEMA 1 electrical enclosures

General purpose. Prevent dust, light and indirect splashing, but not dustproof; mainly prevent contact with live parts; use indoors and under normal atmospheric conditions.

2,NEMA 2 electrical enclosures

Not leaking. Similar to Type 1, but with the addition of a drip cover; used in places where condensation may be severe (such as cooling rooms and laundry rooms).

3,NEMA 3 rated enclosure
Weather resistance. Prevent falling dust and wind blowing dust, prevent rain, sleet and snow and other weather hazards, and not be damaged by icing. It is used for ship docks, construction work, and outdoors in tunnels and subways.

4,NEMA 3r electrical enclosure

As 3, but omits protection against windblown dust.

5,NEMA 3s enclosure

As 3, but also operable when laden with ice.

6,NEMA 3RX electrical enclosure

X indicates additional corrosion protection; commonly used near salt water.

7,Stainless Steel Enclosure NEMA 4X

NEMA 3R type and Stainless Steel Enclosure NEMA 4X type double door enclosures are designed to house electronic controls, terminals and instruments, and provide protection from rain, sleet, snow, dripping and corrosion, while providing ventilation for sensitive equipment. The NEMA 4X-rated two-door enclosure is designed to provide additional protection against hose collapse, water splashing, and oil or coolant leakage.

8.NEMA 5 enclosure

Dust-tight. Provided with gaskets or equivalent to exclude dust; used in steel mills and cement plants.

9,NEMA 6 enclosure/NEMA 6p enclosure

Submersible. Design depends on specified conditions of pressure and time; submersible in water or oil; used in quarries, mines, and manholes. 6 is temporarily submersible, 6P withstands occasional prolonged submersion. Neither are intended for continuous submersion.

10,NEMA 7 enclosure

Certified and labelled for use in areas with specific hazardous conditions: for indoor use in Class I, Groups A, B, C, and D environments as defined in NFPA standards such as the NEC.

11,NEMA 8 enclosure

Certified and labeled for use in areas with specific hazardous conditions: for indoor

and outdoor use in locations classified as Class I, Groups A, B, C, and D as defined in NFPA standards such as the NFPA 70.

12,NEMA 9 enclosure

Certified and labelled for use in areas with specific hazardous conditions: for indoor and outdoor use in locations classified as Class II, Groups E, F, or G as defined in NFPA standards such as the NEC.

13,NEMA 10 enclosure

MSHA. Meets the requirements of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, 30 CFR Part 18 (1978).

14,NEMA 11 enclosure

General-purpose. Protects against the corrosive effects of liquids and gases. Meets drip and corrosion-resistance tests.

15,NEMA 12 enclosure

General-purpose. Intended for indoor use, provides some protection against dust, falling dirt, and dripping non-corrosive liquids. Meets drip, dust, and rust resistance tests.

16,NEMA 13 enclosure

General-purpose. Primarily used to provide protection against dust, spraying of water and non-corrosive coolants. Meets oil exclusion and rust resistance design tests.
